I Continue

NaPoWriMo 2020: Day 16

Used to call myself
a sister to trees,
and a maker
of stones.

Creating my home
from inked words
carved onto
white paper.

What used to be
such an easy flow,
has now become
a fitful stream,

of stops and starts,
and a slowing heart
that most often dreams
of simply resting.

And yet,
I continue.

Note: Image is one of my first attempts to draw using my paint program, and its effects app. Although I had four years of Art in High School, I could never draw a tree that actually satisfied me. Many years later, when I started teaching, I met a visual artist who wanted to write poetry. So we swapped lessons. All of those memories came to the fore when I pulled up the image, and that led to the poem.

Strong words, from a strong woman. Yes, you are strong. You are here, writing. Your comments are always wise and insightful. We can’t let our tired bodies define who we are. I try to work on keeping my spirit alive, every day. Easier said than done.

Marianne, you are doing the one thing that will keep your spirit alive. You are writing. That means you are actively creating something each and every day. The original meaning for the word “create” is “to breathe life into…” Can’t do more or better than that, can you?

I feel exactly that way, this April, tired, fits and starts. But still here, still continuing. I love that you are writing your way through April, my friend. I missed your poems.

So have I, Sherry. It hasn’t been easy, but I am finding that this is something I can do. It is much of the me I have become. I don’t know why I quit for so long, but am not going to worry about that. I’m just happy I am here, in this moment.

I so identify with the fits and starts, but as you say, we’re writing and we’re alive.
