Contemplative Moment

For Poets United Thursday Think Tank prompt:  Time Out
http://poetryblogroll.blogspot.com/2011/06/thursday-think-tank-51-time-out.html

Contemplative Moment

Stops for a moment.
Sits on the wooden bench
with wrought iron arm rests.

Rust discolors once shiny black,
while faded green paint softens
contours, inviting relaxation.

Vague dreams, like dandelion
fluff whirl round, seeking ground,
a place to rest.

Make a nest for future days
and better ways of being
whatever she might become.

Unknowingly begins to hum
song that comes to mind,
like swirling dandelion fluff,

then lets the words softly
slip from her lips, while
nodding in agreement.

It is time to move on.

Notes: Does she or doesn’t she? I like a bit of ambiguity at times. Thanks to Viv’s comment for the swirling dandelion fluff dreams and the Dixie Chicks for Not Ready To Make Nice.

  1. The Dixie Chicks rock – have you watched Shut Up and Sing about the whole Bush thing? Fantastic. I love this poem, Elizabeth – I am nodding, too!

Sherry, this song crops up every once in a while and I remember what I have forgotten. It speaks to me of many things, and I am glad,

Lovely contrasts in this, Elizabeth: moving from practical description: “Rust discolors once shiny black,
    while faded green paint softens…”

to the dreamy, thoughtful, restful end.

Viv, yes I worked hard at the contrast. The soft yeilding beginning that led to the song, about personal conflict that whirls around inside like dandilion fluff, until things settle with a decision about movement to be engaged in. The decision makes peace within. Thanks for your comments,

    contours, inviting relaxation.

    Vague dreams, like dandelion
    fluff whirl round, seeking ground,
    a place to rest”
