Finding Self Again
Heartbeat flutters in chest
like pigeon stuck in coop
kept from doing one thing
she needs to be doing.
Spent months writing daily report.
Not allowing even a squeak
while surveying north to south
this map of self-imposed silence.
Smiles at thought to transform
face from what she has always
been mated to. Laughs aloud
as she flies through cloud of words.
Meeting this instinctual need,
treating herself to sweet basic
wish to create even more, perhaps
better, lines of poetry.
Elizabeth Crawford 5/25/14
Notes: Have been spending my time culling through thirty years of poetry, sifting through a mountain of paper, looking for the ones that will fit into book manuscript I am creating. Wasn’t sure about today’s wordle list, but then came upon something I wrote a long, long time ago. Had to laugh because, although it has nothing to do with the word list, it has everything to do with the subject of this current poem. Here is the old poem, and yes, I actually did try to quit writing poetry for a time, and kept my journal while doing so:
Surrender
Pen bleeds black ink.
Color of death
and deep darkness.
Lock it away. Refuse
to reach for its roundness
but it calls clearly
through layers of wood
and metal, where I’ve caged it.
Resist its cry.
Replace it with chocolate,
gain twenty pounds,
now nothing fits.
Pick it up again.
Lose physical hunger
inside jaws greased
by years of words
and breath that moves
heartbeat
far from stilled.

A poet is never finished there are always better lines waiting to be written. Laughing is good but there are tears as well!

A happy take on the prompt. I like the old one, too, very much. Sadly, chocolate accompanies my creativity and poetic deserts alike!

Once a poet it burns inside wanting to continue writing. There can be no other way. For creativity works in peculiar ways. Great one Elizabeth!

Such a shift in those years and words…maybe writing can be improved but depending on what or how you write maybe it’s more developing and exploring what’s inside and placing it down in words..which yes is an instinctive, sweet basic wish..and i love ‘the doodle’..bright even in monochrome..

Liked both poems, if you are putting a book together, interesting to place them close together!

Glad you didn’t keep that pen locked away. Enjoyed your poems, notes, and mandala.

I also had second thoughts about todays wordle list. I found it difficult to get inspired by the selection. Anyway, I like how you used the words and the second (older) poem next to the new one gives it extra meaning.

Thank you for sharing both pieces, Elizabeth. We will keep trying for better all the time, but as you remind me, there are many gems to sift through, already written. Your older piece spoke deeply to me.

I would like to believe with you that the better lines are on the way. Well, they’re always on the way, aren’t they? That’s why we keep writing!

Elixabeth, it is about writing and rewriting. I love what you did. I am very late making the rounds, I didn’t have the best of the last couple of days. I am feeling better now.
