Cloaked Reality

She escapes cruel prison
of everyday existence
through magical lens
of imagination.

Becoming whatever she chooses:

a fleet huntress, like Diana,
in pursuit of wild prey;

a wanton woman
with enough cash
to satisfy any whim;

a young girl named Venus,
dressed in blue denim skirt,
denuding a small patch of daisies.
Good gift for a beloved parent.

Still knows difference
between what is real
and what is not.

Suspects that what is not
is what keeps her
breathing.

Elizabeth Crawford  12/8/13

Notes: Imagination is often the only survival tool that many possess. Fantasy is sometimes the wish for what could or would be, rather than what is. Image is a mandala made by a friend, using a photo I took.

  4. Very thoughtful, Elizabeth. I really like it, especially the last two stanzas. But everything leading up to them is what makes them good, so there you go.

    Imagination definitely keeps ‘you’ alive in so many ways..reality is best approached with a lot of sugar and cake to hand..

    Today you were second, when you are first I know all is “right with the world.” Merry Christmas, may the imagination continue to cook in the New Year!

    thats ok…we all need our escapes…def good to keep in mind what is real and what is not…cause we can not live in dreamland…and if we ignore enough reality it is trouble as well…..

    I want that lens of hers! At my age all girls are Venus. How right you are about imagination. As writers it is essential but what we write is not a mirror of ourselves at all.

    Becoming whatever she chooses

    That says it all. Imagination keeps it revolving and makes the poem alive! Nicely Elizabeth!

    So potent. I wonder what she would become if she finally got those things. Or if she would even leap if given the chance. I don’t subscribe to it, but often the dream is chosen over the reality.

    Where would we be without our imagination? Reality is fine, but it is good that we sometimes have an effective means of escaping. Smiles!! I’m all for using imagination as much as possible.
