After Breaking
(Response 2)
Thundering voice triggers bomb blast inside head, avalanche of images and memories. For several moments, couldn’t move, reliving time inside Women’s Shelter: helter-skelter struggle to offer safety in a world where little exists. Hours spent listening to stories
pouring from battered lips once kissed by well known offenders. Shock of recognition,
knowing that story was my own, had happened inside my home, sometimes in front of my
children. Often wished to ship us all to a calmer land, where soothing sun and softly
lapping water might heal invisible scars we all carried. Hard to resist, to not harden heart against thriving love and marriages ‘made in heaven.’ But it was there I began to learn
about resilience: coming back after being beaten down, finding strength in all those broken places.

Notes: As I said earlier, prose poems do not come easily to me. Yet, after really struggling with Brenda’s wordlist, and reading all the prose poems responding to the prompt, these words didn’t want to go anywhere else. I did work in a Women’s Shelter, specifically asked by The Director because of my own background and history. She and I had met as non-traditional college students and I guess she thought I’d be a good role model. One of the first things I did after filing for divorce was to apply to the University near where I lived. It is also the reason why my first response to the Day 20 prompt was taken from that particular book by Susan Still, A Commune of Women.
You’ve delivered a very strong message…

Powerful and personal message here – wrapped in the package of a beautiful poem – if you “struggle” with such form – know that it was well worth the struggle for the poem that seems effortless 🙂

Love that you found resilence and strength in broken places. I am sure you were an excellent role model. Your poem has substance and strength of belief. Prose poems are definitely not easy.

This is beautiful, Elizabeth. I’ve worked in a shelter, and been a victim, too. This is a wonderful exploration. You don’t sheen it over, but you point to resilience. That’s something we all need. Thanks for this piece.

Perhaps like scar tissue..after we are broken..inside or out..in a way we become stronger..i wish no one had to though..that we could all be left in full..wholly together..inside and out..that’s a world to wish for..

Elizabeth, you have such strength and life wisdom. I know you would have been a fantastic role model in the transition house. We have walked that same path through suffering to resilience, hope, and better days (years). Thank Goddess that time is far in the past now. Great write. I love your prose poem. I must try one.

Definitely powerful and good for you! I also worked with battered women as a counselor. You express the fears so that I feel them too.

We had a friend, thankfully without children involved in a relationship that she was finally able to escape from. She’d let him back into her home to try and collect some own money and got beaten again. It is never worth the cost to get beaten for any amount. Thank you for helping others.
