Stepping Stones
Slowly wake from seemingly
long sleep. Shake head
trying to dislodge cobwebs
from rafters of mind.
Unintended hibernation.
Hard work of remembering,
trying to get back to where
it began. Endless unraveling
of blurred images.
Trying to find Normal.
Normal doesn’t exist. Empty
wish, like spring green grasses
whispering as they reach
to embrace weathered shack.
Still seeking home.

Notes: Sometimes the inspiration comes in a set of waking images. One leading to another, seemingly disconnected, but not. A stream of consciousness sort of experience. That is what happened this morning. The images came, but until I wrote them down, they didn’t connect. I like the result, and the structure they took. Image is a photo taken in my sister’s garden. Stepping stones have always intrigued me, reminding me that each step on our path is a choice we make. Music is Peter Gabriel’s, Solsbury Hill.
Love how he changes directions and the music simply continues.

The challenge of waking up and rediscovering that normal doesn’t exist! That would pretty much set the tone for the day in which hopefully one stepping stone will find the next.

I love the butterfly step and in the words of Eminem F* being normal (it’s overrated – J and Alice might add;) we’re not as brave as him

I am smiling at the unintended hibernation. I so know the feeling. Every morning. Lol. There is poignancy in “still seeking home.” Lovely, my friend.

You last, simple line affects me deeply, Elizabeth. I have lived in eleven different states, and countless cities and towns, and I am still seeking home. Maybe it’s a futile quest.

“Trying to find Normal”—and I love that you capitalized it, as if it’s a specific place, like any other spot on the map—imagine if we could just punch it into a GPS and follow directions to get there?

Yes, they are and we always have a choice.

I so much wonder sometimes about the border between real and imaginary… maybe dreams are just the same…

What is normal anyway? One man’s normal is another’s disconnect. I like that stepping stones in our lives are choices we make. So true. Well written!

I guess there’s an element of peace when we accept that normal does not exist. I so much enjoyed this poem which reminds me of the usual fog I’m in upon waking to another “abnormal” day.

We all look for normal in this chaotic world – have yet to find it – trying to settle for a bit of inner peace…bkm

Your creativity certainly didn’t wane with your process or structure.
Very nice reading, for me.

I’m not sure what ‘normal’ is anymore. We really seem to have left it behind somewhere back around the bend! Or maybe it just never did exist at all.

Normality is being static and that will get us nowhere…on the other hand that could be tempting too!
