Birthday Poem

Who am I to receive this gift
of years, while others have not?
Stone moments stacked up like wood
in a pile, loose chips scattered
on surrounding ground.

These call to me like far-off flute music
whispering through a dreamscape scene, begging me
to sit with bent elbows, to quietly contemplate
poems written, images created and colored.
Other times, concerning things that can’t
be undone, some that make me grin, want
to cheer having been so blessed, and all
that lies between.

Before noon, they’ll come to get me,
bring me to their celebration, and I will
comply, will join them. Inwardly knowing
that shortly, I will return to tend small wood fire
that has kept me warm, kept me breathing
for seventy-one years.

Elizabeth Crawford 4/9/2017

Notes: Lucille Clifton wrote a birthday poem each year. I have always admired her tenacity. I’ve done only a few (three or four). Although I gathered the word lists, I only blew a kiss at them, using less than half. Somehow, 71 makes me feel both victorious and fragile, all at the same time.

Image is a photograph of a bonfire in my sister’s backyard.

  5. Who are you? You are the giver of words and images and hope (that I, too, will be as “victorious and fragile” when I’m 71). That small fire, your poetry speaks of, spreads through your brilliant words and warms us all.

I really like the idea that each new year is a birthday gift. As our years add up, we really need to think of it that way. And we need to keep tending those fires which have warmed them over the span of life….one year, one log at a time.

Happy Birthday Elizabeth!! Cake and chocolate bunnies and some Peeps, too. Funny today I didn’t use many of the words, thought my poem was stronger that way. Perhaps, right now, I just have less to say?

  11. “Who am I to receive this gift of years when others have not” … what an opening line! We all should start each day in gratitude and this should be our mantra. Thank you.

Have a wonderful celebration, Elizabeth. I love your poem, especially knowing you will return to your small fire that has kept you warm all these years. I so resonate with that. It is good to go out, and even better to return home.

I’ve never written a birthday poem. Maybe soon on my 71st. Yours is wonderful. May all your years be happy. And just for the record, I don’t see you as fragile.
