Fear Diminished

I am afraid. Feel tremble
of earth beneath me, aware
as it seeps upward through
soles of feet, then climbs
higher.

Air is dark, heavy as lungs
work ever harder to take it in.
Mind opens door to imagination
which rushes in and shouts,
Run!

Then realization kicks in, reminding
me that I am an old woman, barely
able to walk without a cane,
and then only slowly and with
caution.

Look around. See unknown stranger
standing next to me. Slowly turns
and I see my own fear reflected
in rounded eyes. Reaches out hand,
I grab.

We stand together, facing into
unknown, holding on to one
another, both afraid, yet knowing
that a fear shared is a fear
diminished.

  1. I had the impression of a mirror, but was glad for the sturdiness of hands.
