Do you sometimes sit still, let memory curl
itself around a present moment?
Snuffling and chittering like insectivores around
the new spring growth of your being?
Or let them graze slowly, like herbivores,
busily chewing up time and past experience?
Jealously guarding, before feeding carnivorously
on tender velvet-like lamb of new beginnings?
Some memories are omnivorous, sucking
life blood from anything new or challenging.
Echoing the voice of failure, blotting out light
of possibilities, dropping it into bowl of oily darkness.
Seek instead those memories haloed in silver glow
of having completed whatever goal was set.
Know that you are alive, still breathing, aware
that letting go is a promise of continued movement.

Notes: I almost gave up when I first saw the two word lists. Impossible. I have spent the last few weeks sort of dithering around a project that needs to be finished. When I thought of that, this piece started slowly forming in my head. It is really a note to myself.
I did use all of the words, and the image is a manipulated photograph.
Well you certainly deserve applause for atempting both lists including all the biological terms. Every decision is of course affirmation of holding on still to life and taking part.

Love it..but wonder if we have a choice or memory is its own master!!!

With all these ‘vores’ about, I feel I should go and check my pantry for moths.

Memories! Clever and very effective use of the most difficult batch of words I have come upon for a very long time.

Indeed, I think we sometimes do have to choose the memories we want to feast on. Better to seek those with a ‘haloed glow’ rather than those which involve more troubled times! Good to see you, Elizabeth.

I almost gave up on the Sunday’s Whirligig word list myself—and I put it together! I think you did a fine job with your “memories” poem, even though the lists of words to work with were daunting.

Elizabeth; I am so proud of you and jealous, too! Again,I could not use all the words…they just didn’t work for me! But it was fun to try. I loved what you were able to do with the lists.

I am impressed you managed such a depth-ful poem with such impossible words. I would have given up, for sure. Your Muse nibbled on the repast and gave us a wonderful poem!

I think to use the different terms as metaphors was a brilliant choice… and why not how we are affected by out past… those memories and what they do to us.

I don’t know how you do it–one list is hard, two is impossible–and you moved me with the piece–there is something wonderful about memory and how it curls around us–beautifully done!

Remember the good ones for one is not to be restrained from progressing for more! It is to fight and not to struggle for the spectacular ones. Great lines Elizabeth!

Highly impressive! Either list is challenging; combining them is showing real mastery. Er … mistressery?

Wonderful – I usually find poetry written with lists of words in mind tend to be stilted and unnatural sounding. This was great.
