gossip

Overheard

Authenticity of love might go missing
when gossip, or doubt , tilt jagged talk
which neighbors listen to while breakfasting
on left over cheese and chocolate.

Might be hushed by pain and soft crying
when only bits of truth meet wild imagination,
only interested in rubbing wealth of maybes,
over an ending of satisfying titillation .

Genuine caring becomes lean, perhaps
even lost, in this far from proper alphabet
soup of negative speculation. Nothing
good comes of this overheard sharing.

Notes: This wasn’t exactly where I was heading when I started, but the words were adamant about where they wanted to go. Interesting to note, when I went looking on the web for images of ‘gossip’, the first set of images (over 20 stacked like the one above), had only two male participants. I preferred Rockwell’s truer perspective. I did use all of the words.

I am not sure gossip is so popular anymore. A Facebook account will provide all you ever need of tittle-tattle…but beware if you join in! Norman Rockwell was a brilliant artist with such exquisite detail, wasn’t he?

The chocolate and cheese were difficult but they fit perfectly in this poem – like a kind of mixed feast of positive and negative..overheard but not understood- and likely not the true picture at all..i love the alphabet soup and grr as regards women being perceived as gossipers..

These words did tend to take the lead, Elizabeth. I like how the gossip turns into Chinese Whispers

I agree about gossip…nothing good can result. You wove the words into a timely message.

  10. I assume that we have replaced the gossip by stalking social networks instead of the classic ways… the damage is mostly the same though

Gossip is a way of creating community. We care, we care about the neighbors, the people we don’t know, they are us after all. Not really different. Today the words worked for me, too. They don’t always.

That is right, Elizabeth. Lots of other things can occupy our mind that can be shared!
