Would Be King
The crow erupts from the roses,
shimmering shadow of glistening
feathers and fury. Cawing his plea
that we rise up, stop this swarming
nonsense that would paint love,
and gentle compassion as a canker
sweeping out to destroy our world.
That somehow loathsome, barbed
wire walls of boiling hatred should
replace the sweet sense of understanding
and forgiveness. That thorny sins
of bigotry and mud slinging would
better serve our purpose. That violence
and war are better than hard won peace.
How long will it take before we know
that this thief has only his own purpose
in mind. That he feeds on rippling fear
and the growing bud of blind ignorance?
That his only wish is to park his butt
on a throne so he might declare himself,
King. Lord, of all he sees.
Elizabeth Crawford 6/19/16
Notes: The crow is a symbol of higher law. That which is above whatever mankind makes.
I usually steer clear of politics, but these words refused to go anywhere else. I did use all of them.
Image is a bonfire photo put through the kaleidoscope. It has always reminded me of an ancient idol, perhaps a false one?
Yes, you do have a slight problem over there in your decision making. Sadly there is more profit in hate than love. Excellent and seamless inclusion of all the prompt words.

Your first line is so very vivid. I see the flowers exploding, and the crow rising, in a storm of petals and chaos…
It’s hard to stay away from politics these days. Things are looking so grim. So even those of who often keep this sort of things to ourselves, have to say something… or implode.

The opening verse is so captivating – we need to listen to that crow..all crows.. the orange one must be stopped – how did the universe even align to put him in this position – he is indeed an arse..we can only hope it doesn’t park itself on a throne..

I agree with Jae, such a wonderfully captivating opening line 🙂 its difficult to ignore politics in times like these. The reference to “violence and war are better than hard won peace.” is so powerful and thought provoking..!

The attention seems to be given to matters we loath than to bother our efforts on how to solve them. Very true, Elizabeth!

This has to be my favorite poem of yours. I think the way to approach politics through metaphors and symbols works extremely well… alas most people who need it would neither read nor comprehend… (I think we had similar thoughts in our poems this week)

And who would understand!? Bigotry is the supreme power in our times.
Your political commentary is spot on. Very well penned. 🙂

And we all know just who you mean! This is powerful writing, though, which could (unfortunately) be applicable to many in the course of history. May they last longer than their present subject!

I love the image of the crow, as higher law, erupting from the roses. Yes, all the noisy one wants is to be lord of all he surveys………….the emperor who has no clothes, full of sound and fury. Well-captured and well-played, my friend.

Those who would sit upon the throne usually do not have our best interests at heart….’do not pay any attention to the man behind the curtain’ as the Wizard of Oz says….he is false!

I agree, I think your image does look a lot like an ancient idol. It’s a great idea, given your message in this poem. Definitely a false idol.

Loved it all over again. He wants the throne, but has NO CLUE how to govern. Scary times to be a minion. Sigh.
