Three For The Show

          I

Amidst the tawny tassels of sun-glossed
wheat, the cracked-plaster scarecrow
appeared to be an apostle blessing his
diverse flock of needy, broken followers.

          II

In the chill mist of early morning, buzzing
black bugs crept through hugging vines,
pushing the price of bottled wine to a mad,
hard, unreachable high.

          III

Caring could be a trap, a pact of knotted
ties, lucid seeming lies, like the mud pies
we made as children, products of imagination
never meant to be healthy nurture.

Elizabeth Crawford   5/29/16

Notes: Time to admit defeat. For a year now, I have been doing one poem from the two word lists. This week, no matter how I tried, I simply couldn’t find the poem. The words seemed to want to set off in quite differing directions. I finally admitted that if I wanted to post this week, it would have to be these three pieces which have nothing to do with one another. Yet, each one contains something I like. For now, that’s more than good enough.

I have been happy to write separate pieces to the two prompt sites and always admired your ability to write just one. That the three pieces differ in intent that matters not one bit. I certainly had a laugh at No. 2 and both the others had a significant and wise message.

The words took you to a wonderful place – i think – a triptych of memory..piercing imagery – and a kind of wanting/needing – perhaps like trying to make the words fit themselves that poor burnt scarecrow, unreachable wine and tasteless mudpie conveyed so much longing and discomfort in a way..ouch but completely relatable.. too many husbands maybe trouble but too many words worked out quite nicely here 😉

  3. The separated becomes a unity – wonderful use of the world, where I especially love the climax of the third.

I think I prefer act one over the other two, Elizabeth, but they are all good snapshots of an instant. Act one reminds me of a hot golden Summer’s morning scene – I can actually smell the fresh air when I read it!

I enjoyed your three poems, Elizabeth. It is better to write three meaningful pieces than one piece which doesn’t congeal. Enjoyed the second one especially..contemplating the relationship of the black bugs to the bottled wine. Smiles.

  11. What’s really cool is that I think these poems are related. They form a type of story when put together, at least in the mind of the reader. The cool thing about how poetry can work at times.

All three verses carry a negative theme, yet in Verse Three there is hesitation. I think the human soul craves a positive light. Its it cut off point from being scary monster

    Have a good Sunday

Your work is always beautifully rendered. These all feel vulnerable to me in some way–and in that way, related–

Good enough! I liked what you did, and also had a hard time with the words…left several out, from each list.
