Swaying In The Arms of Disappointment

The forces that affect our lives, the influences that mold
and shape us, are often like whispers in a distant room,
teasingly indistinct, apprehended only with difficulty.

Why feel guilty? She’d taken a risk,
and failed. Couldn’t fight the facts.
Certainly didn’t need a witness to her
heavy, numbing sense of woe.

For hours, she’d been drifting without
an anchor. Looking for some glint of plan
for action, only to find herself disappearing
into this mossy covered hush of indecision.

A state that would not fix, or put an end
to her fierce inner turmoil. She was alone.
Didn’t have a team of friends that might
assist in hitting on some praise-worthy resolution.

Swaying in the arms of disappointment,
she suddenly knew she was just going to
have to begin,
again.

Elizabeth Crawford  1/24/16

Notes: The quote is by Charles Dickens and I found it on the front page of a Dean Koontz novel, titled Whispers. My site wouldn’t allow me to cite it properly.

This is simply what the words brought to mind. I did use all of them. Was tempted to change mossy to mushy, but thought that was too much of a stretch. When I decided to stay with the mossy, the image immediately came to mind. It is yet another of my new templates, done in India Ink.

  2. I think it’s still worth to take the risk.. Disappointments come in many flavours, but nothing’s worse than never to have dared…

mossy covered hush of indecision – works perfectly – they were challenging words this week..moss does dampen but is soft..made me think of a baby..being properly looked after, cradled and swayed, swung and cooed back to sleep – safe..what a chasm there can be if this doesn’t happen..seems like from the beginning it’s risk…and survival..and no team of friends to rustle up a resolution..perhaps though we can only find our own way out..the brightness in the middle of this mandala is like the sun..moving in from the moss to warmth and some kind of resolution..i hope

On reading this I thought of the Irish phrase “keening and rocking” the sort of sadness coming with grief. Having the resolve to start again is so hard when considering the loss and abandonment you feel. Beautifully written.

Yes, sometimes one has to come up with one’s own solutions. So true – Everyone does not have a team of friends (or even family) to run things past. It takes perseverance to come up with answers on one’s own totally, but it is rewarding when it is accomplished! One has to find a way to BEGIN.

  7. I love that although things have been more than rough, in the end she chooses not to just sit and and fall apart. She chooses to push forward, knowing that it can all go really bad… but it can go really well, too.

  8. I love how the words come to you and you create these amazing poems with these wonderful pictures. I have found when we are alone, that is the time we tend to find our best ‘praise-worthy resolutions’.

Better to continue than sit worrying, learn from your attempts to avoid the same path each time.

  12. “Certainly didn’t need a witness to her”

I think we are truly to ourselves when we don’t have witnesses to our expressions. Then we’re more real.

  20. I love that line “swaying in the arms of disappointment!” I also did a poem for this challenge. I think I forgot to add it to Mr. Linky. I am always forgetting that little detail. I love the poem, it’s poignant searching and at the end a resolution that is, as most often happens, a beginning.
