When Movement Takes Energy
Apathy holds a stench, smelled only
by its possessor. Clenched teeth bring
on headaches that can be felt throughout
cells, organs, might even be embedded
deep in individual DNA.
One might pretend to play, but the soul
remains silent, giving poorest of signals.
Verses become no more than unscripted
scars hidden beneath a seemingly scarlet
skirt holding nothing more than empty hope.
Friends fly away or are pushed off tower
of graying isolation. No amount of money
will bridge this decaying pond of despondency.
New shoes demand movement but moving
takes caring, takes energy.

Notes: This is not my reality. Have been here but that was long ago. The words led me back to that memory, it holds a distinct and precise place inside, one I don’t wish to relive any time soon. Image is a photo taken some time ago.
So true. That last line is so powerful.

Perhaps we only know what will make those shoes move once we have found our own way to walk in them…energy however does seem the key and yes, how apathy does stench

I agree that the second verse is very powerful indeed particularly the “Verses become no more than unscripted scars hidden beneath a seemingly scarlet skirt”. Stunning.

You definitely have captured that ‘stuck’ space where one can so easily be trapped. Anyone who has ever experienced this will recognize its truth!

To be stuck like that, whether for real or metaphorically can take all your energy… it must be the best of things when it finally get’s easier.

Wow that opening line is so strong and visceral for me….it is what I think the world may be heading to….and indeed we have to care and try or we will be doomed as well…..

A wonderful wordle – we’ve probably all been in that position at one time or another, and it is just as scary as your poem paints it.

So perfectly worded, that “decaying pond of despondency”.

That line about verses becoming like scars is truly haunting. Nice job!

This has a nightmare-ish quality to it. Deep and very dark and a place I have no desire to visit

It is interesting that those places in our memory, can resurface, unexpected…and no, we don’t want to return, but interesting to revisit from the distance of time.
