Questions

How does one speak of blasphemy?
Of a church dealing from double,
plague-ridden deck of definitions.
One for itself, another for all others?

Or the monkey-business of politicians?
Who would keep the whole plate
of wealth for themselves, and leave
only dry bread crumbs for those they
supposedly represent?

Born into this beyond belief, beautiful
and sacred world that is being torn apart by
constant rustlings of face-saving machinations,
who will listen?

Elizabeth Crawford  3/15/15

Notes: Have spent time today, recovering images from a small sketchbook done several years ago. The words, especially blasphemy, seemed to be completely lacking in any sort of cooperation. So, I turned to the sketchbook to distract myself by scanning in some of the images and starting a file of what I refer to as zen doodles. This one captured my attention and when it was completed, went back to the words which seemed to fall all over themselves smoothly finding places, and anchoring themselves into position. Have I said, I love synchronicity?

  1. So poignant and so true. I find it very nice to read a political poem right now. The world seems to be getting wilder. Thanks for sharing.

Hard hitting especially the second verse which I find to be true in all occassions. We [in Philippines] are getting close again to the 2016 elections & for sure we’ll be hearing again more & more false promises of success that barely come to reality. I want to read this poem out loud when that time comes.

Synchronicity is a wonderful thing – and comes at either the best or worst times i find…blasphemy was a hard word…not thinking globally i could only think of the dark machinations within…but (speaking of synchronicity) maybe that’s how the wider world is run…and all the good squandered…i love the sketch…it reminds me of the ying/yang symbol…dark and light…but beautiful together…

Foolish us thinking that democracy would give us government for the people. So what is the next alternative after all other means of rule have failed?

Solid questions put forth, but sadly, empty answers abound, and thus, the world succumbs to the ‘dry bread crumbs’ it is thrown.

    Powerfully put!

I think you spoke of blasphemy just magnificently……indeed if,
    “a church dealing from double,
    plague-ridden deck of definitions.
One for itself, another for all others?”
isn’t blasphemous then I don’t know what is. Brilliant wording.

  19. You wrote of blasphemy so very well.
Excellent piece – of which I am very much in agreement with: the theme of those at the top being so greedy as not help those at the bottom who are suoporting them in their drive for wealth.

Elizabeth, I like where you took those words – or where they fell into place for you. I was just teaching my students about Roger Williams, and your words seem most appropriate. Great last line. – Richard
