Scrambling On The Bridge To Forgiveness

Pain is the shell that encloses your understanding…
__Kahlil Gibran

Blown trust of betrayal might be highest
form of test for human spirit. A trial of sorts,
where both sides of one distinctly divided being,
bring opposing heart felt arguments
to course of same events.

Not unlike an egg beaten with stick
inside thick ceramic mug, blended
with small amounts of milk-white truth,
then tossed into heated pan, stirred
to become thickened amalgam
more readily swallowed

and meant to nurture a soul
toward forgiveness.

Elizabeth Crawford  2/23/14

Notes: I used to tell my students that regular writing of words will take you to that place you don’t want to go, but often need to. That’s just what happened when I got the word list. Took one look and the two words, blown and trust cemented themselves together and opened the floodgates on a rushing river of memories. And yes, I did not want to go there, but the words, held at bay for almost 24 hours, refused to go elsewhere. The original draft of this piece was much shorter, but I worried that it wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense to anyone other than me. Asked my daughter what she thought and in the course of explaining my original idea and the thoughts that went along with it, I found the rest of the poem, such as it is. I truly believe that forgiveness is essential to spiritual health and that it can only begin when one realizes that the other individual is just another human being doing the best they can to survive and get by, guided only by their own personal truth, whatever that might be. Once that is understood and accepted, forgiveness becomes much easier than it was felt to be. I used all the words except for peep.

  1. A Great title to your poem! Forgiveness can be hard to swallow but I agree with your process notes. We have to remember to try to see from the others side and remember we are all just human. (of course, that’s easier to say than to do sometimes!)

The hardest thing with forgiveness is that it can be one sided. However it is over for forgiver and that is the important thing.

Swallowing the powder – which kills us and saves us..the image of the egg beaten in the cup threw up a strong image of someone standing in the kitchen the weight of thoughts and memory bearing down but still going about the everyday..as we must I guess..like editing ourselves..

About forgiveness, of course the other person is just a person trying to do the best they can, about apologies, it seems important the offender, needs to accept responsibility for what they have done, acknowledge what they have done, and promise never to do it again….otherwise there can be no restored trust.

Hi Elizabeth, Interesting that the shell (of individual sensibilities) as per your Gibran quote is implicit but cleverly unmentioned here in this treatment of the scramble towards forgiveness. That powerful image of shell and all the can be encased within features in my poem too… Regards Scott http://www.scotthastie.com
