MizFit On Remembering

You wanted to know some things,
asked a lot of questions about
what happened so long ago.
It’s hard to know just where
to begin.

Memory has a touch both heavy
and light. At times nebulous,
a cloud of mist that hovers just
out of reach, yet a strong breath
could cause it to dissipate. Other
times opaque, so solid it might
crush a fragile spirit like a concrete
slab teetering on end, waiting
to be toppled by slightest brush.

Perhaps your timing is right
for I have tonight to tell the tale
of the scarlet red dress, cut from
whole cloth like the blazing torch
of recollection you ignited with all
of your questions.  Before I do, you
should be warned that this isn’t
a heavenly vision, but a bleak tale
of betrayal, pain, and the high cost
of hidebound tradition.

Are you sure you are ready to listen?

Elizabeth Crawford  5/19/13

Notes: Another installment in the saga of Anastasia. A promise to myself that I would see this through. The wordle words were a tremendous help this week. Thank you, Brenda.

A tour de force in the continuing story. May I be cheeky and ask if you meant to leave in the red here “of the scarlet red dress, cut from” because not only is it tautology, it spoils the flowing rhythm.

I’ve given my sea god a rest for a bit: scouring Ovid’s Metamorphoses gave me the blues! But he’ll be back!

Right on! Anastasia. I think that scarlet red dress should be its own song.

Yes, I liked the way you used each word, what a craftsman….or should I say, craftswoman!

A strong response, Elizabeth. If a person asks questions, he/she has to be ready to hear the answers….and prepare for the reality, even though it may include some things they may (or may not) wish later that they didn’t know!

  8. Ooo… this last stanza really creates a hunger for more of her story!! Really well done, Elizabeth…it feels like flashy fiction in poem form!! 🙂

Yes..is the answer..red is such a signifier..i imagine the red dress a little like red riding hood..the story wrapped up in the unfolding cloth and colour..

Oh, yes, I am drawn in… Questions shift and sift the memories. What is the truth? And scarlet, red, a colour with such signifigance, and a dress cut from one piece of cloth! Good stuff!

I don’t know where the story is going, or where it has been but the language of the current segment held me for the whole poem. And the answer is, YES! 🙂

so so enchanting this is … I know I’ve read other bits but am not sure if I’ve read all of it, will have to check; this part kept me entranced and yes, to the scarlet red dress … tautology be damned.
