A Single Suitcase of Memories

She would call, say “Welcome
to my morning,” or a simple “Come,
talk to me,” and urge to clear schedule
would merge with anticipation for what
we, together, defined as a “deep breakfast.”

Her apartment up on Solsbury Hill,
held a balcony, where we’d sit consuming
delicious warm croissants smudged
with what she laughingly called her
homemade apricot fudge, and we’d talk
for hours of our current projects,
the tiny geometries of life (both past
and present), while her cat Spoo
(that’s Oops spelled backwards)
would sprawl in my lap, her soft
gray fur constantly pulsing with
a rumbling purr of contentment.

She had an inquisitive mind, often
activating my own, and our words
could range from common digging
in the dirt, to stellar. I will always
regret that I never took time to tell her,

“Sophia, in your eyes, I found home.”

Elizabeth Crawford  4/6/13

Notes: Song titles: Come Talk To Me, Solsbury Hill, Digging In the Dirt, and In Your Eyes are by Peter Gabriel.
Deep Breakfast and Tiny Geometries are by Ray Lynch
and Welcome To My Morning is by John Denver.

I love music and my tastes are a bit eclectic. This was a fun process and allowed me to cover a lot of ground. The poem is somewhat fictional, yet based in some very specific memories. Sophia is the name of my inner crone. Her name means Wisdom.

PS: Once again, my return comments are disappearing for many of your sites. I can like your work, but not leave a comment. My apologies.

There are so many times that we wish we’d done this or that differently, took the time to say I love you, or give someone a hug. All these missed opportunities. Surely there’s a lesson in that. I loved your poem, Elizabeth.

Would you believe I just finished my Wordle pieces…yes two. And I am glad I did. They are so very different! You’ll have to wait until tomorrow though. The short verse is almost the shortest one I’ve ever written. You’ve played ‘stuff the prompts’ well. A thoughtful reminder to speak before the opportunity is lost. While I enjoy music, I am not adept with who, what, where and when of any of your titles …Well John Denver does sound familiar – though not that title and I think I have heard of Peter Gabriel.

Thanks for visiting and leaving your link.

This is beautiful, Elizabeth. I loved the story-like quality. And the lesson is invaluable: Tell your “besties” you love them, and tell them often!

The comfort and warm apricot fudge seems to outweigh the regret of not saying..i wonder though if it was said and heard without words..
