Fencing With Words

Sometimes crouches there
behind her fence
of words: nouns and verbs
placed with care
like wooden slats

DSCN0287where sunlight seeps between cracks
to do intricate line dance
with newly mown grass,

DSCN0329while a full moon glances
over other seasons.

DSCN2799
Has her reasons for seeking
peculiar safety,
knowing fences keep in,
but also keep out,
allowing her to shout
or whisper
as she needs to.
Built-in gate through which
to escape,
to slip like sunlight
over opened door of metaphor,
fly away to distant shores

DSCN2648
where, and whenever,
she chooses.

Elizabeth Crawford  1/23/13

Notes: Have written several poems about fences. Was sorely tempted to use one of them, but heard that first line and went exploring in my photo files for further inspiration. Fence images were taken through my patio door. Final river shot was taken on a one day road trip to find Autumn colors with my sister. Clicking on the images enlarges them.

I crouch behind one of those fences too, Elizabeth. I love how these lines flow down the page with the great fence photos………so nice to see you posting at Verse First!

Hi Sherry, as I said in my notes, fences do make good poems and I was tempted to use an old one. However, that first line had me curious and I wanted to see where it would go. It’s easy to hide behind words, but also hard not be open with them. Thanks for stopping and commenting,

This is gorgeous, but this line really caught me, ‘knowing fences keep in,
but also keep out,. Thank-you for sharing.

Thank you Janet, fences always serve more than one purpose, even when they are made of words,

  4. Wonderful poem and photos! My favorite line: where sunlight seeps between cracks

Thanks Denise, once I took a look at the photos, the lines became simple. There’s a lot of life in my little backyard and I have a lot of fun with my camera. Glad you enjoyed it,

  5. Nouns and verbs placed with care like wooden slats… that has a real ring to it. We writers and wordsmiths do create blockades -and gates- don’t we? Quite and enjoyable read, this!

I’ve done several pieces concerned with different types of fencing. But, when that first line swung into view, I was intrigued and just had to find out where it would lead me. Love that it took me to open water and glad you enjoyed,

Elizabeth, I enjoy your fence pictures. I am a fan of fence photos as well. I like the same part as Kim indicated…nouns and verbs placed with care like wooden slats. I like it because it is SO original. I too am struck by the fact that fences keep in and keep out, and I wonder oftentimes what is most important. I truly savored this write!

Mary, I wonder sometimes if the individuals who put them up, really know what they are confining or inviting. I’m taking the savored to the kudo box. Thanks so much, my friend,

A lovely blend of words and images to convey your good message.

Rosemary, thank you for your generous words. I like your dragon avatar, it looks like line weaving, which I also enjoy.

  12. allowing her to shout or whisper – love this concept of a fence!

Robyn, I shout when I’m really angry, so I prefer to do that in private. Have also learned that a soft response invites others to lean in and listen. Thanks for stopping in,
