Emergence

No longer willing to coast
through this space of bland
gray-haired existence, she
unlocks closet door to gaze
on full spectrum of color
and fabric.

Innate sense of rebellion
rises to paint giddy grin
on elderly lips, no longer
worried about stress
it might cause to delicate
balance of current peers
desperately in need
of rejuvenation.

Today, she will relentlessly
forge ahead, wrapped
in lavender shawl with long
bone-white fringe, her deep
purple hat at jaunty angle.

Tomorrow, the bright red
silk displaying rampant
dragon, embroidered with
shiny gold thread, and day
after, the royal blue cocktail
dress embelished in silver
sequins.

She giggles softly as she thinks
of the looks on their faces when
she enters their communal
dining room.

Attagirl. I was in similar mood. We women of a certain age must stick together!

And so we must, Viv. And glad you seem to be feeling better, thanks for stopping in,

  4. I love women like this. She would be someone I’d like as a friend. 🙂

I believe that most, if not all of the women, on the poetry circuit online have a bit of her in their soul and that makes me happy. Thanks for dropping in,

I like this rebellion, even if it is imaginary! You look marvelous darling!

I loved the Golden Girls, especially their clothes. They were excellent role models in their own fashion. Thanks, my friend,

This is fabulous. Your jaunty purple hat is lovely. Your clothing displays creativity and fun….it may even be daring. I tip my hat to you. 😉

Definitely daring on several levels, Brenda. Personally, I find it hard to resist a challenge. Thanks for keeping me in the game,

Elizabeth, you paint a lovely picture of this woman. My own mom was very much like this. Her own woman right up to the end. My piece is basically about her this week. Nice work using all of the words.

    Pamela

I loved your crocheted analogy Pamela. Am very glad this reminded you of your mom, and happy that you shared that piece of you with me, my friend. I have several aunts (Mom had six sisters) and this is a compilation of all of them, including my Mom. She had more than one closet full of different outfits.

Elizabeth, delightful. It just flows so well, unfolding in fine fashion. Each image came to my mind’s eye, and the whole poem works so well. A wonderful character portrait, and a great message. Reminds me of that “I shall wear purple when I’m older” poem/saying.

    Richard

Thank you very much Richard. Being compared to that particular piece brought back so many memories and connections. It is definitely a part of my larger story.

This is fantastic! The other day I was at my elderly friend’s (more elderly even than I, hee hee), and two of her friends stopped by. One was dressed in a vibrant orange shawl that lit up the gray winter morning. As we admired, she preened and sashayed and flounced about, to our delighted cackles. LOVED! IT! Your poem is just like that moment.

And I love the story you have shared. I remember many similar moments, thanks so much Sherry,

We should all be so lucky to not worry about what anyone else thinks. I agree with others about the happy place this took me to.

I posted two verse for this wordle. Both in Mr. Linky, one story continuance and the other non-story. Please do visit the Sunday Whirl and perhaps glance at one. 🙂
