Emergence
No longer willing to coast
through this space of bland
gray-haired existence, she
unlocks closet door to gaze
on full spectrum of color
and fabric.
Innate sense of rebellion
rises to paint giddy grin
on elderly lips, no longer
worried about stress
it might cause to delicate
balance of current peers
desperately in need
of rejuvenation.
Today, she will relentlessly
forge ahead, wrapped
in lavender shawl with long
bone-white fringe, her deep
purple hat at jaunty angle.
Tomorrow, the bright red
silk displaying rampant
dragon, embroidered with
shiny gold thread, and day
after, the royal blue cocktail
dress embelished in silver
sequins.
She giggles softly as she thinks
of the looks on their faces when
she enters their communal
dining room.

I have several aunts (Mom had six sisters) and this is a compilation of all of them, including my Mom. She had more than one closet full of different outfits.

Elizabeth, delightful. It just flows so well, unfolding in fine fashion. Each image came to my mind’s eye, and the whole poem works so well. A wonderful character portrait, and a great message. Reminds me of that “I shall wear purple when I’m older” poem/saying.

This is fantastic! The other day I was at my elderly friend’s (more elderly even than I, hee hee), and two of her friends stopped by. One was dressed in a vibrant orange shawl that lit up the gray winter morning. As we admired, she preened and sashayed and flounced about, to our delighted cackles. LOVED! IT! Your poem is just like that moment.
