First Kiss

Knew she was still in love,
and could be ’til the end.
Would never forget scent
of tall marsh grasses, or sight
of them swaying in late afternoon breeze.

Heap of small stones gathered
to hold down corners
of bright-colored tablecloth.
Flick of small wings as insects
skimmed surface of river water.

Knew she fell in love that day
as she filled white pages
with load of words she’d carried,
then buried for years, and would never
forget the feeling of release, ease
that enveloped her, like evening mist,
at that first kiss
of pen on paper.
