For We Write Poems: Window Faces

Paper Persona
Life lived in slight shadow
of quasi-linen weave, leaving
marks that chart a course
encrypted by whim
of each moment.
Sometimes whole words,
notes to curb desire
for entrance into world
misunderstood at best,
where rest is found
only in small snatches.
Drawn lines bent to fit
arbitrary form of someone
else’s concept of whatever
should be normal.
Easily crumpled, tossed aside,
forgotten, or lit in flash of flame,
instant heat that swiftly becomes
no more than ashes.

Elizabeth, I love the last two stanzas, they speak volumes.

“Paper Persona” is a really interesting take on the picture. I enjoyed the poem, especially the last stanza – “easily crumpled, tossed aside…”

This is wonderful Elizabeth. Where have you been?

And that is one of the things I love about our community. To prompt, or not to prompt, no one minds so long as we have been able to write. That, everyone understands.

The last stanza underscores the temporal nature of so many things: words on a page, which can easily be destroyed with the paper; or the images in the window, which can be destroyed by a cast of light, the movement of a thing or a person, or a sudden rainstorm. Gorgeous write.

To say that an image or words are so easily transformed into no more than ash is a subtle reflection of the fragility of life. You have made a momentous statement with your “Paper Persona”. Elizabeth, this is good.

Deep thoughts, Elizabeth. They suit winter and the gray skies. The last stanza is especially powerful.

The title is intriguing and I like how the persona self-immolates in the ending. You’re much missed, Elizabeth. Me, I was gone for a while, and have returned like a prodigal. *kidding*
