In the Beginning

Butterfly Beginnings

In the Beginning
there was nothing
but darkness
brooding over
darkness.

Wisp of dream,
like infintisimal butterfly wings,
fluttered through
and no one ever knew
from where
it came.

And darkness reached
out to swallow
that flitting movement,
couldn’t allow such
within its presence.

Essence of dream
was need of transformation.
And the darkness
was transformed,
would never be the same.

And so two were locked
in eternal contrast
from which all else
has been created.

This is the Visual for today’s prompt:  5/28/11

Process Notes: When I saw the prompt the first words of this piece began to whisper in my ear. But, would go no further. Rather than struggle with it, I turned to something else. A digital image, I’ve been playing with for several days. The result of that was the above image. When it was finished, the rest of the poem came easily. Have always been intrigued with the theory that the flutter of a butterfly’s wings on one side of the globe, could eventually cause a tsunami on the other side of the same globe. The four wings of a butterfly symbolize the four stages of its own transformation from pupa to fluttering wings. Even a tiny dream, if allowed, can become something of tsunami force.

Gorgeous image and poem. Light and dark in conflict over dreams: hummm – I bet dreams win!

Viv, glad you like both and I would agree, dreams are survivors at their core,

Transformation is key. The vagueness of the two is rather effective an ending. I love the image & concept of a butterfly.

Irene, butterflies are symbols of transformation. This one took a while, but there’s a whole lot going on with those fluttering wings. Myths are usually vague in language, leaving spaces for indiviudal thought and creativity. Thanks for visiting,

The poem has the feel of a real creation myth. I can imagine the Navajo or Hopi telling this around the fire. They both believe in the balance and with your darkness and dream, you present us both. Not only does the darkness need the dream, but the dream the darkness, to transform. And the image…lovely.

Margo, I am also big on balance. If all were dream/light, we would be totally blinded. If all were darkness, there would be no movement. When they find balance, we find definitions. I like writing myth stories. This had the added kick of coming through the image. Thanks for understanding,

Elizabeth, a beautiful turn of words here. I love that image. I knew it was something you had been playing with, before reading the process notes.
    “Essence of dream
    was need of transformation.”

    Pamela

Pamela, I really like the image as well, and doing it seemed to fuel the myth within the poem. Thanks for visiting and commenting,

  8. Menacingly beautiful!

Menacingly? Coupled with beautiful at that. Not sure exactly what you mean, but it immediately brought a Peter Gabriel lyric to mind, one of my favorites: “The darkness still has work to do.” This one is definitely going in the kudo box, if for no other reason than pure intrigue. Thanks Madeleine,

Beautifully written, Elizabeth, with your decriptive words and flow it is like hovering on the wind. The butterfly is perfect.

Thank you Renee, you describe how I feel about myth and its purpose.

Love the idea of dreams as butterflies! Darkness doesn’t stand a chance! This is wonderfully woven!

Thanks Linda, I believe that dreams are messages from the subconscious mind. What better way to gain our attention then to come in that form? But, also think we need a bit of that darkness the better to see and understand definitions. Thanks for visiting,

  12. You’ve captured the essence of creation here. Beautifully done.

Anthony, the creative process has long been a fascination of mine, and I also love myth. It isn’t a far leap from that to this. Thanks for your very generous words,

Elizabeth, this is lovely. That image of the butterfly that begins the poem is beautiful – and then darkness reaching out – and then transformation. “Without Contraries is no progression.” as Blake said.

    Richard

Richard, I’m pretty partial to the image myself. I do so enjoy the digital art. And I am a long time student of seeking and finding balance whenever and wherever possible. Thanks for reading and for the Blake quote,
