Making Her Way

Making Her Way

I believe
fate smiled and destiny
laughed as she came to my cradle
“know this child will be able”
laughed as my body she lifted
“know this child will be gifted
with love, with patience,
and with faith
She’ll make her way…*
Natalie Merchant, Wonder

Knows herself to be both
miracle and magician.
Wonder to others, as well
as self. Hearing whispers
in whirling wind, making
moments to be remembered.
Swirling slight of hand,
creating, recreating I Am
in each rite of passage.

Dancing to ancient rhythms,
blending them with new
awareness, found daily
along singular way of path
she chooses to follow.

Hollowed out by past
experiences, now fills that
emptiness with knowledge
gleaned from simple things.

Feathered wings, furred paws,
fangs grown sharp in battle
to survive. Turtle shells, sand
between toes, and ring of evening
bells. Stones with veins of other
life and time passing like water
running freely through molten
porous life of being.

Oh yes, she is making her way.

Elizabeth Crawford  4/12/11

Notes: * Song Wonder, written and sung by Natalie Merchant. A video of celebration of all ages, can be heard and seen here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zpYFAzhAZY&feature=related  Natalie worked with children and adults who suffered from various disabilities. She wrote this song in celebration of their spirit and their will. I believe it is a soul song, meant to lift anyone who has ever felt disadvantaged on any level.

Memorable moments indeed. A true benedicite!

Viv, I love it when you use French, don’t understand it well, but love it. My maternal grandmother spoke French and I always thought it sounded a bit like singing. Thank you,

Andy, I have lived just long enough to know the truth in that statement. Thank you,

Brenda, those words hit my mind and I was stunned. I think that might be at the top of all the lines I have written since beginning this journey. Thanks,

  7. Wow, Elizabeth! The journey deepens! This is so beautiful. I especially love the being both “miracle and magician”. Yes! “Dancing to ancient rhythms.” Yes! And the “feathered wings and furred paws”. That entire last stanza is inspired and inspiring. Just magnificent.

Sherry, that is what I saw in the image, what I know from my own experience. And love what you are finding in these images as well. It’s rather exciting, isn’t it? And thanks again, for tagging along,

Actually Pamela, I think each of these poems inspires the next one and so on we go, one day, one poem at a time. I feel blessed and so grateful. Thank you for the gorgeous, that goes in the kudo box,
