Beginnings of Memory

Traveler knows truth
of simple wisdom
inside new song. Clear
outline of hills she
has been walking
are mirror reflection
of up and down,
day to day life,
that sometimes becomes
gray flat line going
on, forever.

Knows how it feels
to fall through cracks
in sidewalk, always waiting
for someone else to come
along, to give direction.

That is what she remembered
in the dream: very reason
she had begun this journey.
That other song, how it had
called to her, set her moving.

How she had come to know
it was time to stop waiting.
Time to gather former remnants
of self, finally find her own way.

Knew her soul had caught up,
or that she had. Understood
that those once buried pieces
of darkness would be light
on this path she alone
now traveled.

  1. Keep moving forward, or life will be full of regret.
A bit sad and reflective today, but I guess it’s all part of life’s journey.

Thanks Stan, relective yes, but sad? I don’t think so. If we do not honor where we came from, how can we know joy in the place we are in? Memory is always with us, built in for a reason and a purpose. I believe it is the foundation of what we have learned, the what and how of everything we know now. If we ignore it, I fear we would be in danger of cutting ourselves off from both our humanity and our potential for wholeness.

Oh this is just toooooo gooood. And a perfect insertion of lyric. I, too,am often moved to write by some lyric I can’t get out of my head. To be honest, when I read the title, I thought of Paul Simon’s Under African Skies.

I’m really digging all your work.

You nailed it Ron. “This is the story of how we begin to remember/ This is the powerful pulsing of love in the veins/ After the dream of falling and calling your name out/ These are the roots of rhythm and the roots of rhythm remain.”

I may have to call you Al from now on, after all, I was called Betty for the first thirty years of my existence. Probably my favorite album of all time. How does one sit still and listen to it? And exactly where the title came from. Thank you,

Love the idea that the once buried pieces of darkness could be transformed into light.

And to remember to remember why we began the journey… Explosive!

ohh, Andy. Exposive? Another one for the kudo box. When we choose to forget, we send that information into the darkness. When we later remember, it comes forward holding its own bit of light, showing us where to place our feet on the present path we are following. Thank you, for also being a light on my current path,

  4. Beautiful, Elizabeth. I waited to read yours till after I had posted mine. I love your reflections……..love the catching up of soul and persona, love the knowing we are on this journey alone…………and yet, somehow, assisted by our fellow crones, also making their way along. I think I can see your lantern, winking through the trees! Love this journey! It is exactly the right time to be doing this. There are no coincidences. Meant to be!

Ahh, Sherry. Your words are incredibly heart warming. Like the winking of a lantern, at night, through the trees, beckoning me onward. How do I thank you my friend? And the synchronicity is superb! Some day, or night, I want very much to share a bonfire with you and all of these other poets. Wouldn’t that be fantastic?

There is such a quality of being reborn here; I love it! The fragments of moments that collect and through them all, good and bad, our souls are formed~ Beautiful~

Ellen, thank you. I like that idea: memories as a vehicle of rebirth, labor pains, squawling and sometimes cooing. Yes? Rebirthing ourselves, renewing our souls with each turn of the cycle.

One more word, if I may: I thought you might enjoy THIS, esp the link to “That’s Where I’ll Be.”

Thank you Ron, you are more than welcome at any time. Wonderful word “earworms.” I read both the article and the resultant poem. Music I grew up on. And loved that final celebratory conclusion to the poem. Words and music share a sort of magic that never grows tired.
